Windows 11

Should you download Windows 11 now with all its glitches and bugs?

Microsoft has released an early version of Windows 11 for its Windows Insider Program members, and users are already encountering issues and bugs with the new operating system.

This is the point because the developer build is being used to test the full version, which will launch in Holiday 2021. Users are encouraged to report bugs and other issues.

You might have stumbled across the Windows Insider Program when trying to find out how to download Windows 11. Although it’s a great way for you to test the new OS, we don’t recommend that you do so unless there is a spare computer or laptop. You might have to deal with some issues in the early days.

Unable to download Windows 11

Funny enough, the Insider program members couldn’t download the OS. During its announcement, Microsoft promised that existing members who didn’t meet the minimum system requirements would have access to the Windows 11 preview build regardless. However, people soon discovered a bug that prevented the download due to ‘missing hardware requirements such as a TPM module.

This did not affect only older devices. Even modern hardware that met the minimum system requirements set forth by Microsoft was denied access. The message said: “Your computer does not meet the minimum hardware requirements to run Windows 11. Your device may continue receiving Insider Preview builds up until Windows 11 generally becomes available. In that case, it is recommended that you clean install Windows 10.

Microsoft has already issued an update to the settings app, making this a simple fix. To apply the update, reboot your device, and you will be good to go.

Search in Start Menu not available

The new Start Menu search bar has an issue that prevents you from typing into it. Although there are many other options for searching Windows 11, it is difficult to find the right one for you if you have a problem with Windows 10.

Microsoft also acknowledged the problem and stated that you could open the Run window to enter the search bar again. This can be done by pressing Win+RYou can click on the keyboard to close it. The search box problem can be solved by simply opening and closing the program.

Although it is unclear when a patch will be available to fix the bug officially, this is likely a temporary solution.

File Explorer still looks like Windows 10

The exciting part about any new operating system release is the ability to see the updated design. So you may have been disappointed if you downloaded Windows 11 preview. However, you will be pleasantly surprised to find that File Explorer looks more familiar than the redesign we saw at Microsoft’s keynote.

Although this skin is based on Windows 10, it is not the default. It’s unclear why some users have this option. Bleeping Computer discovered that this is a simple fix.

  • Click the File Explorer taskbar at the top and select “View.”
  • Click on ‘Options” at the top right and then go to the next ‘View.
  • Now you should see a list. Look for the option that says ‘Launch folder windows in a Separate Process. Make sure the box to its right is not checked.
  • Apply the changes. Now File Explorer should initiate a restart.

Once File Explorer has been restarted, you will now see the redesigned layout of Windows 11.

More Windows 11 issues…

Although the issues mentioned above can be fixed, some bugs are still not resolved.

Most of these have already been acknowledged by Microsoft on the ‘Known issues’ section of the build release blog, so we can assume that these will be patched out in the coming weeks, but as previously mentioned, you’re joining the Insider Program with the expectation of finding issues like those listed below before the OS officially rolls out to the public.

  • System text scaling will scale widgets proportionally and can result in cropped widgets
  • The taskbar will not appear on multiple monitors, but it will be back in an upcoming build
  • When hovering over Task View on your taskbar, the preview window might not show the entire window
  • Future releases will address a small number of legacy Settings pages and fit and finish bugs.
  • Quick Settings may not save the state you select when you use them to modify Accessibility settings.
  • In some cases, the Windows Store might not have the install button working.
  • Some apps do not allow ratings or reviews.

These are just a few of the issues that have been discovered. Please refer to the entire list in the build release post for more information. If all of this seems like too much work, then it might be worth waiting for Windows-11 to become available for consumers, currently estimated to be as early as October 2021.
