Eve, significantly older than both Jennifer and Julian, was a mother to three grown daughters and a doting grandmother. Her wealth of parenting experience was a fountain of wisdom for the couple. Having a knowledgeable guide with ready answers to their numerous queries as new parents living just next door was comforting. Eve had always been a wonderful neighbor, but ever since she learned about their first baby, their bond had strengthened.
Eve quickly grabbed the phone after it only rang once. You could tell she was eager because of how fast she answered. Jennifer knew that Eve, always seeking a bit of excitement, didn’t hesitate when she heard the news. Without wasting a moment, she gathered her belongings, prepared to accompany the couple to the hospital.
As they entered the hospital, the atmosphere was a flurry of activity. The doctors sprang into action, their professionalism evident as they conducted a series of meticulously detailed tests with unwavering care. The sound of the ultrasound machine filled the otherwise hushed room, each beep amplifying Julian’s mounting concern. But test after test, everything came back normal. The health of Jennifer and their yet-to-be-born child appeared flawless.
Still, they didn’t feel relieved. The answers they were looking for were nowhere to be found. The words of the vet, suggesting something might be wrong, stuck in their minds, filled them with fear and doubt.
Once they arrived home, Jennifer could no longer hide her emotions. Overwhelmed, she collapsed to the floor, her feelings overpowering her. Tears streamed down her face as she cried out, her sorrow echoing through their once peaceful home. “I don’t want to choose between Whiskers and our baby,” she whimpered. Julian tried to comfort her, urging her not to worry so much. “Maybe there’s nothing wrong,” he said in a gentle tone. He knew things could potentially go wrong, but he didn’t want to add to his wife’s distress by expressing his own concerns.
