#1. Dark Waters
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 89%, Year: 2019, Runtime: 2h 7m, Director: Todd Haynes
Dark Waters will make you angry. Mark Ruffalo stars in this true story from filmmaker Todd Haynes, who is known for more formally ambitious work but can deliver the old-fashioned indignation required for this one. Based on a New York Times article, the film follows an inquiry into the DuPont corporation’s poisoning of a small village with chemicals in its drinking water. Ruffalo is fantastic, as are Anne Hathaway, Tim Robbins, and, most importantly, the legendary Bill Camp.
#2. Devil in a Blue Dress
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 92% Year: 1995, Runtime: 1h 41m, Director: Carl Franklin
In this 1995 adaptation of Walter Mosley’s novel of the same name, Carl Franklin penned and directed one of Denzel Washington’s most undervalued performances ever. Washington plays Easy Rawlins, a World War II veteran in 1948 who becomes involved in a story that classic noir filmmakers would have loved. The only flaw in this charming and fascinating film is that Washington did not portray Easy in an entire franchise of films.
#3. Glengarry Glen Ross
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 95%, Year: 1992, Runtime: 1h 40m, Director: James Foley
For a long time, it seemed like David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1984 masterwork couldn’t be filmed, but Foley, who collaborated with the playwright as screenwriter, worked it out, producing one of the best ensembles of the 1990s. Alec Baldwin is infamous for stealing his one scene, but the entire cast here is stunning, particularly Al Pacino (who was nominated for an Oscar), Alan Arkin, and Jack Lemmon.
#4. Inside Man
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 86%, Year: 2006, Runtime: 2h 8m, Director: Spike Lee
Yes, Spike Lee once made an excellent action film. The filmmaker of Do the Right Thing and Da 5 Bloods put his own take on the heist picture with this excellent 2006 Denzel Washington vehicle. The usual collaborator plays an NYPD hostage negotiator who is called in after a bank heist on Wall Street. This is tight and effective, proving that Spike Lee can nail any type of film he chooses to produce. This might be Lee’s most underappreciated film. It hums.
#5. The Killer
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 85%, Year: 2023, Runtime: 1h 59m, Director: David Fincher
Michael Fassbender delivers his strongest performance in years as a chilly hired assassin who battles to keep things together after a job goes disastrously wrong. It’s a fantastic film about a self-proclaimed perfectionist who is always defying his own narration; it’s simultaneously hilarious and thrilling. One of the greatest in 2023.
#6. The Killing Fields
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 93%, Year: 1984, Runtime: 2h 21m, Director: Roland Joffé
The tale of the Khmer Rouge and the genocidal horrors committed in Cambodia in the 1970s is chronicled in the Oscar-winning film The Killing Fields, which is often difficult to see but well worth the effort, especially given that violence around the world has become such a hot topic in 2024. In this grim but vital picture, Sam Waterston and Haing S. Ngor (an Oscar winner) play journalists investigating the Khmer Rouge’s war crimes.
#7. L.A. Confidential
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 99%, Year: 1997, Runtime: 2h 17m, Director: Curtis Hanson
Curtis Hanson directed this adaptation of James Ellroy’s epic crime novel of 1950s Los Angeles. Starring Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey, and Kim Basinger, it’s a perfect thriller and one of the best movies of the ‘90s. So many films since this one have tried to mimic the tough-talking thrills of it and fall completely flat. It’s harder than it looks to be this cool.
#8. May December
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 91%, Year: 2023, Runtime: 1h 57m, Director: Todd Haynes
Todd Haynes’ latest film, starring Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, is a magnificent character study of an actress who realizes that certain individuals are impossible to understand. Portman plays a star who seeks to understand Moore’s character, a woman who raped a child while teaching and eventually married that young man. Charles Melton is fantastic as the now-adult victim trapped in endless youth.
#9. Moneyball
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 94%, Year: 2011, Runtime: 2h 13m, Director: Bennett Miller
One of the best baseball movies ever created was based on Michael Lewis’s 2003 book, which details the Oakland Athletics’ management of the 2002 season and how they transformed the way the game is played by incorporating analytics. Brad Pitt delivered one of his best performances as general manager Billy Beane, a man who understood he needed to develop a new approach to evaluate talent if the A’s were to contend. This is a deep, intelligent, and captivating film that is especially intriguing given the Oakland Raiders’ current situation in 2024.
#10. The Nest
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 90%, Year: 2020, Runtime: 1h 47m, Director: Sean Durkin
This was one of the best films of 2020, despite being a victim of the pandemic. Carrie Coon and Jude Law play a married couple with two children who relocate from New York City to London in the 1980s, only to have their marriage deteriorate. our is a superb domestic drama and the finest film on our list that you have probably not seen. Durkin’s keen visual language adds to the great character study.
#11. The Power of the Dog
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 94%, Year: 2021, Runtime: 2h 6m, Director: Jane Campion
The film that ultimately earned Jane Campion an Oscar for directing is one of the most celebrated in the streaming giant’s history. Campion directed this version of Thomas Savage’s novel of the same name, which follows a ruthless landowner (Benedict Cumberbatch) who torments his brother’s new bride (Kirsten Dunst). This beautifully depicted period drama, which plays like a thriller, unpacks themes of toxic masculinity and manipulation in such a way that it is impossible to turn away. It is not only one of the best Netflix Original films but one of the best films of the 2020s in general.
#12. Traffic
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 93%, Year: 2000, Runtime: 2h 27m, Director: Steven Soderbergh
Steven Soderbergh and Benicio del Toro won Oscars for their epic portrayal of the illegal drug trade at the turn of the century. Traffic, one of the amazing craftsman’s best films, examines the entire drug structure in North America, intertwining the stories of addicts, politicians, traffickers, and law enforcement. Some of the picture feels outmoded, yet the sheer energy of the filmmaking remains ageless.
#13. Wild Things
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 64%, Year: 1998, Runtime: 1h 48m, Director: John McNaughton
This is a classic of the B-movie sleazy thriller era, a film that draws on old-fashioned noir and even Greek tragedy to tell the story of two teenagers (Neve Campbell, Denise Richard) who become involved in a scheme with a slimy teacher (Matt Dillon). It’s best known for its sexual content, but this is a sophisticated film that explores class and privilege in unexpected ways.
#14. Baby Driver
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 92%, Year: 2017, Runtime: 1h 53m, Director: Edgar Wright
It’s a little more difficult to see this picture now that some of its cast members have been accused, but it’s still a very well-made piece of action cinema, telling the kinetically unforgettable narrative of a getaway driver who knows all the best songs. Ansel Elgort, Jamie Foxx, and Lily James may be the film’s stars, but Wright’s performance steals the show.
#15. Everything Everywhere All at Once
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 93%, Year: 2022, Runtime: 2h 19m, Directors: The Daniels
Following a brief appearance on Amazon Prime, this is the first Netflix release for the 2023 Best Picture winner, a film that defies categorization as it recounts a story about other realms and butt plugs. This risky picture, which premiered at SXSW, grew in popularity until it won multiple Oscars, including Best Picture and Director, in 2022. It’s not like anything else.
#16. Kill Bill
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 85%, Year: 2003, Runtime: 1h 50m, Director: Quentin Tarantino
We’ll still have to wait for the long-awaited full cut of the two Kill Bill films into one epic movie (as well as the long-rumored third volume of this story), but that shouldn’t stop you from watching two of Quentin Tarantino’s best films, which are now available on Netflix. Uma Thurman’s portrayal of The Bride, a renowned action character seeking vengeance on the guy who betrayed her, is one of QT’s best.
#17. The Matrix
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 83%, Year: 1999, Runtime: 2h 16m, Director: The Wachowskis
Neo and the gang returned to HBO Max in late 2021 with The Matrix Resurrections, and the reception was predictably divided. You know what is not divisive? The fact that the first film still reigns supreme. In the more than two decades following the film’s premiere, the story of an ordinary guy who discovers that nothing is as it appears has had a significant impact on popular culture. Neo can be seen everywhere. (You can now watch the complete original trilogy on Netflix.)
#18. Mr. & Mrs. Smith
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 90%, Year: 2005, Runtime: 2h, Director: Doug Liman
The entertaining new remake series may have ended on Prime, but Netflix still has the one that started it all. The film that gave us Brangelina. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt play a seemingly average suburban couple who find they each have secret identities as rival assassins. When they are sent to kill each other, all hell breaks loose.
#19. Oldboy
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 83%, Year: 2003, Runtime: 2h, Director: Park Chan-wook
It’s difficult to explain to people how this film spread throughout the film community before Film Twitter existed. Oldboy, which was recently restored for its 20th anniversary, has now been re-released on Netflix, and it retains all of its searing force. It’s the story of a kidnapped man, and its greatness is that it’s more of a whydunit than a whodunit, leaving viewers and protagonists wondering about a very heinous motivation until the final unforgettable act.
#20. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
🍅 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 95%, Year: 2023, Runtime: 2h 20m, Director: Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson
What a treat for Netflix users that the movie is already available on the service, just weeks after it premiered in theaters and was released on Blu-ray. This is how you make a big-budget blockbuster sequel, expanding on the ideas from the previous film and laying the groundwork for what appears to be one of the best superhero trilogies in history. Netflix members will want to watch this film over and over again since it is so detailed and creative. Do it while you still can.
